Travel Safety Tips

It’s easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle of a busy travel day. However, don’t forget about travel security and safety precautions while traveling. Follow these travel safety precautions to ensure that your trip is memorable for all the right reasons.

Before you leave

  • Stop mail delivery.
  • Trust a neighbor or friend to watch your house.
  • Limit what you share on social media.
  • If traveling for business, make arrangements using firm’s designated travel agency.
  • Be familiar with the location you are visiting; consult your firm’s security officer and internal website for travel alerts.
  • Consult your client or security officer for transportation and hotel recommendations.
  • Ensure you have all travel documents (including required visas) and make copies in the event they are lost or stolen.
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary with a family member, colleague, or friend.
  • Do not carry large quantities of cash.
  • Know local police emergency number.

Traveling by car

  • Keep doors locked and windows up while driving.
  • Know route before leaving.
  • If using a ride-share service (e.g. Uber, Lyft), confirm vehicle description and license plate.
  • Always ask driver, “who are you here for?”.
  • Park in well-lit areas, near entrances.
  • Keep keys ready when approaching your vehicle.
  • Check in and around vehicle before entering.
  • Do not leave valuables in plain sight.
  • Avoid distracted driving; do not use phone, but keep charged and readily available.

  • Have hotel write room number instead of saying it aloud.
  • Keep doors and windows locked.
  • Know emergency exits.
  • Never answer the door unless expecting someone.
  • Ask hotel concierge or manager if there are “trouble spots” or other areas that should be avoided.

General awareness

  • Walk with purpose and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Use your electronic devices with caution.
  • Never venture out alone.
  • Stay on main streets and avoid walking after dark.
  • Trust your gut instincts. If something does not seem right, it probably isn’t​​​​​​​.
